This big family of dracaenas, from the classic corn plant on thick canes to the bright 'Lemon Lime' and 'Hawaiian Sunshine', shares the same easy care. They're slow, tidy and happy in rooms that are too dark for most plants, which is why you see them in so many offices.
Light + placement
These dracaenas handle low to medium light better than almost any floor plant. In brighter, indirect light they grow faster and the lime and yellow stripes are stronger. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which bleaches and burns the leaves.
Watering
Water thoroughly, then let the top half of the soil dry out. Overwatering is the main way to kill a dracaena, especially in low light and in winter, when it may only need water every 3β4 weeks.

Soil + repotting
Use a well-draining mix like our Tropical Potting Mix. Repot every 2β3 years in spring. Cane dracaenas in heavy pots can stay put for years with a fresh top layer of soil.
Feeding + upkeep
Feeding: We feed with Kelpy, a gentle plant food made from BC kelp. Mix 1 teaspoon into 1 litre of water and use it every other time you water. Kelpy is gentle enough to use year-round. Our rule of thumb: if your plant is putting out new growth, even in winter, keep feeding. If it's resting, you'll be watering less, so it gets fed less too.
For a slow, natural boost, top-dress the pot with a thin layer of worm castings every few months, or mix some in when you repot. Prefer a granular food? BIOS Natural Plant Food mixes into the top layer of soil (about 1 tablespoon per 6-inch pot) once a month while your plant is growing. A little white fuzz on the soil afterwards is normal; it's the helpful fungi at work.
Wipe the leaves every month or two. Remove lower leaves as they yellow; that's normal ageing. A tall cane can be cut in spring and will sprout new heads below the cut.
Common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Brown leaf tips | Dry heat, uneven watering or salt build-up | Water evenly; flush the soil with lots of water a few times a year; trim tips at an angle. |
| Yellow lower leaves | Normal ageing | Remove them; nothing to fix. |
| Soft, mushy cane | Overwatering, rot | Let it dry out; cut away soft parts or root a healthy top. |
| Stripes fading | Low light | Move to a brighter spot. |
| Fine webbing | Spider mites | Rinse leaves and treat with Houseplant Spray. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a dracaena good for a low-light room?
Yes. It's one of the best floor plants for medium to low light. See Low-Light Plant Heroes for more.
Why are the tips turning brown?
Usually dry heat or uneven watering. Trim the tips and water more consistently.
Is dracaena safe for pets?
No. It's toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.
Can I cut a tall dracaena cane?
Yes, in spring. New leaves sprout below the cut, and the top can be rooted in water.
