Maidenhair ferns have clouds of tiny, fan-shaped leaflets on wiry black stems: one of the most delicate-looking plants you can grow. They have a reputation for being fussy, and it's mostly about one thing: they can't dry out, even once.
Light + placement
Medium to bright, indirect light, like a north or east window or a few metres back from a brighter one. Direct sun crisps the fronds within hours.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist at all times, like a wrung-out sponge. Check every couple of days; in warm or heated rooms that may mean watering every 2β3 days. Don't let it sit in a saucer of water, though.

Soil + repotting
A moisture-holding mix like our Tropical Potting Mix in a plastic or glazed pot (terracotta dries too fast). Repot in spring when roots fill the pot.
Feeding + upkeep
Feeding: We feed with Kelpy, a gentle plant food made from BC kelp. Mix 1 teaspoon into 1 litre of water and use it every other time you water. Kelpy is gentle enough to use year-round. Our rule of thumb: if your plant is putting out new growth, even in winter, keep feeding. If it's resting, you'll be watering less, so it gets fed less too.
For a slow, natural boost, top-dress the pot with a thin layer of worm castings every few months, or mix some in when you repot. Prefer a granular food? BIOS Natural Plant Food mixes into the top layer of soil (about 1 tablespoon per 6-inch pot) once a month while your plant is growing. A little white fuzz on the soil afterwards is normal; it's the helpful fungi at work.
Snip crispy fronds at the base. Keep it away from heaters, vents and drafts. Group it with other plants or use a humidifier.
Bringing back a crispy maidenhair
If it dries out and crisps, don't throw it away. Cut every dead frond back to the soil, keep the soil evenly moist and the air humid, and new fronds usually appear within a few weeks.
Common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fronds suddenly crispy | Dried out once | Cut back dead fronds; keep evenly moist; it often regrows. |
| Brown leaflet edges | Dry air | Raise humidity; move away from heat. |
| Yellow, mushy base | Sitting in water | Empty the saucer; improve drainage. |
| Pale, scorched fronds | Direct sun | Move to indirect light. |
| Slow decline over winter | Dry heat, low light | Bathroom or humidifier; brighter indirect light. |
